Research & Development Prototypes

bcMeter devices are currently distributed as prototypes for research and environmental monitoring. The core wireless module (ESP32) holds individual FCC, CE, and RED certifications. Full device-level certification is in progress.

Instruments are provided to research institutions, universities, environmental agencies, and professional monitoring projects.

bcMeter is an open-source Black Carbon (BC) measurement platform built for environmental research, air quality monitoring networks, and emission testing. Each device is individually assembled and calibrated in Berlin.

Research Instruments

bcMeter

Portable aethalometer for ambient Black Carbon measurement. Designed for stationary or mobile deployment in monitoring networks, citizen science projects, and field campaigns.

  • BC measurement via optical absorption at 880 nm
  • Optional PM2.5 / PM10 sensor (Sensirion SPS30)
  • Temperature, humidity, pressure (BME280)
  • WiFi interface with real-time dashboard
  • Optional 4G/LTE for remote deployment
  • Optional GPS for mobile sampling
  • CSV data export, open-source software

Multi-wavelength version (880 nm, 520 nm, 370 nm) for source apportionment currently in development.

eBcMeter

Emission measurement instrument based on bcMeter technology. Designed for direct source sampling from wood-burning stoves and similar combustion sources.

  • Direct emission BC measurement
  • Durability testing for Blue Angel certified stoves
  • Monitoring of oxidation catalysts and electrostatic precipitators
  • Aethalometer principle adapted for flue gas
  • Same web interface and data export as bcMeter

See Emission Control for detailed information.

Typical Applications

  • Urban air quality research — Deploy multiple bcMeters across a city for spatial Black Carbon mapping at a fraction of the cost of reference instruments.
  • Academic field studies — Field-ready instrument for research on particulate matter, combustion sources, and health-related air pollution.
  • Emission testing — Monitor wood stove emissions for compliance research, catalyst durability studies, and filter performance evaluation.
  • Environmental agency monitoring — Generate independent, reliable air quality data for policy development and environmental assessment.
